Athletic Directors Join AHSCA and AOA To Form One Hall of Fame Class

The Arkansas High School Athletic Administrators Association will join the combined efforts of the Arkansas High School Coaches Association and the Arkansas Officials Association to form one High School Hall of Fame. The three organizations have selected 15 honorees to be installed in the 2013 AHSCA-AOA-AHSAAA Hall of Fame.

The AHSCA-AOA Hall of Fame was created in 1995 and had selected 213 members into its hall. The AHSAAA started in 2007 and had 19 members. With this year's class the new Hall of Fame membership now stands at 247.

The Hall of Fame selections were made by the group's executive committees in December (AOA) and January (AHSCA, AHSAAA).

The six new AHSCA honorees are Gus Malzahn, Springdale (football); Glenda Patterson, Jonesboro Westside (volleyball); Ron Ripp, Ozark (basketball); Gene Simmons, Murfreesboro (track); Charlie Sorrels, Atkins (football) and Herbert Williams, Brinkley (basketball).

The six new members of the AOA are Bill Breazeale, Fayetteville (football); Clint Cornett, Prairie Grove (football); Duane Cousins, Benton (football); August Hensick, Stuttgart (football); Gordon Hornaday, Fordyce (basketball) and Ellis "Scooter" Register, Little Rock (basketball).

The three new members of the AHSAAA are Atwood "Buddy" Bell of Jonesboro, Conrad "Buzz" Bolding of Conway and Richard "Dick" Hays of Ashdown.

Tim Cooper of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette will receive the Arkansas Activities Association's 2013 Distinguished Media Service Award.

Gus Malzahn: Malzahn is a Fort Smith native and a Henderson State graduate. He coached on the high school levels at Hughes, Shiloh Christian and Springdale and had an overall record of 133-26 and three state championships. He is currently the head coach at Auburn, after collegiate stops at Arkansas, Tulsa, Auburn and Arkansas State.

Glenda Patterson: Patterson coached volleyball at Jonesboro Westside for 37 years. During her tenure she led Westside to six state championships. Her volleyball teams finished as state runner-up 15 times and won 24 conference titles. Her volleyball record is 783-205.

Ron Rippy: Rippy Rippy had career stops at Greenbrier, Clarksville and Ozark. His girls' basketball program won three state championships at Ozark. His 1998 title team was 27-10, followed by a 35-2 title record in 2000 and a 32-3 title record in 32001.

Gene Simmons: Simmons had a 33-year coaching career with stops at Dierks, Murfreesboro, Nashville, Lockesburg and Mineral Springs. His track teams won 34 district titles, one state boys' track title and a state boys' runner-up finish.

Charlie Sorrels: Sorrels served as the Atkins football coach for 24 years and produced 176 wins, 8 conference titles and 19 trips to the state playoffs. He was the tennis coach for 20 years, winning 17 conference titles and 1 girls' state title in 1995.

Herbert Williams: Williams coached basketball, football and track in the Brinkley School District for 39 years. His basketball program ranked among the best in the state in the 1980s, with his 1986 teams going 26-1.His 1975-76 track team finished third in the state.

Bill Breazeale: Breazeale was a member of the AOA for over 25 years officiating football and basketball. In 1975 he worked the AHSCA All-Star football game. He also worked the University of Arkansas' football scrimmages and Red-White games for 23 years.

Clint Cornett: officiated football from 1967 to 2007. He worked two state championship games and one AHSCA All-Star game.

Duane Cousins: Cousins started his football officiating career in 1965 at a local Boys Club. He joined the AOA in 1967, working high school football for 42 years. He worked numerous state playoff games and an AHSCA All-Star game.

August "Gus" Hensick: Hensick began his officiating career in 1970. He retired after the 2008 season, having completed 39 years. He served two terms as representative for District 6, and worked one AHSCA All-Star football game.

Gordon Hornaday: Hornaday joined the AOA in 1967 and officiated basketball for 40 years. He worked numerous district, regional and state tournaments and six State Final games. He officiated football for 35 years and worked the 1995 and 2006 State Finals.

Ellis "Scooter" Register: Register worked as a high school basketball official for 25 years, while working on the collegiate level for 14 years. He worked the 1986 AHSCA All-Star game and the 1987 Overall State Championship. From 1988 through 1993 Register worked three girls' state title games and two boys' title games.

Atwood "Buddy" Bell: Bell was the first athletic director for the Jonesboro Public School System, and a job he held for 12 years. He was also a charter member of the AHSAAA. Bell worked in the Jonesboro system for 35 years, retiring in 1987.

Conley "Buzz" Bolding: Bolding was a successful football coach before accepting the duo job as head football coach-athletic director at Conway in 1984. He retired from coaching in 1991, and retired as athletic director in 2010. One accomplishment was the building of the multi-purpose arena on campus, which the school board named "The Buzz Bolding Arena."

Richard "Dick" Hays: Hays became the athletic director-head football coach at Ashdown in 1954 and remained in that position until his retirement in 1980. He once served as president of the AHSCA. In 1991 the school board renamed its football stadium, :The Dick Hays Stadium."

Tim Cooper: Cooper, of North Little Rock, has covered high school sports for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette since the fall of 1993. He is a Malvern native and a graduate of Henderson State University.
